(Ray) What ever happened to single elimination, progressive consolation???
The most common ABT event of today is the double elimination prog. consolation event... and if you have ever looked at the draw sheet you can see how complicated it is. I guess people like the idea of losing once and still having a chance to win, (albeit an infinitessimal one).
(NK) Actually most ABT's are straight forward single elim, prog conso, then LC starting with all knocked out being about equal. The only DE's are one in Novi and two in LA to my knowledge. 1000 Islands was a slightly modified DE where if I recall, the winner of the winner's bracket is 1st and the loser of the finals plays the winner of the loser's bracket for 2nd place. That's interesting but it produces 2nd and 3rd places after the 1st place is decided and lacking a conso or LC it pays too much a percentage of cash and ABT points to the winner 4,2,1 scale so 4/7 of the pts go to winner. I do think they'll pay a couple more places next year if they get the same good turnout or change the format. I'd propose for 35 players just doing it 4,2,2,1 with main and conso and not having that late 2nd/3rd match. I have no qualms at all about not having a LC or never having one for a two day Sat/Sun event. So many nagging Sunday conflicts occur with LC matches even though they are only 5 pt. Perhaps better to save LC's for 3 day events where there's more time to get the side events almost finished by the last day. But anyhow, please make the ABT event including the LC take priority..doubles playoff can wait etc.
(Ray) FURTHER: As Chuck Bower suggested recently. Let the COMPUTER do the draw. (NK) 100% agree
(Ray) Post the computer printout of that draw up front and THEN do the big master draw sheet. WHILE the first round is being PLAYED. (NK) 100% agree
(Ray) Have a few clocks and use them when either player requests it. Simple, fast, done. Hard to beat, I think. (NK) have a few more than just a few clocks !
