In Response To: 2008 Illinois State Championships (Chuck Bower)

A couple of readers have suggested that clock proponents are a vocal minority.

Chicago Point's recent online poll on clock use, which had 263 participants, suggests otherwise:

I strongly like the clock. It should be required for all matches:38%
I like the clock especially if my opponent is a slow player35%
I am neutral towards the clock10%
I dislike the clock but tolerate it if my match is delaying the tournament10%
I strongly dislike the clock. It spoils the game7%

So, of these responders, 73% of responders were favorable to clocks, 10% were neutral, and 17% were unfavorable.

Of course, it's possible that vocal clock supporters were overly represented in the Point poll.

Perhaps Linda and other tournament directors could poll the Open players who actually show up to play in their tournaments on wheather they think clocks should be

  • (a) mandatory
  • (b) allowed if either player wants one
  • (c) optional if both players agree to use one
  • (d) only imposed on slow players
  • (e) never used

-- and consider kicking future policies up one level from the responses. The experience in venues where clocks are much in use suggests that most clock-wary players will quickly get used to them.
