OT: Bower line on LHC disaster?

Here is a sample calculation:
The energy of the interactions (1.7e13 electron volts) that will be occurring at CERN occur when energetic cosmic rays strike objects in our solar system. So we can do a comparison between the number of such cosmic ray interactions in the solar system (over the life of the solar system) with the number of such interactions which will occur at CERN over a 10 year period. Those ratios are:
with the earth as the cosmic ray target: 3.8e5
with Jupiter as the cosmic ray target: 4.9e7
with the sun as the cosmic ray target: 4.6e9.
Note that these are upper limits. I.e. this times as many similar interactions have occurred at these various places in our solar system without 'catastrophic' results.
Tomorrow I will attend a lecture which discusses the beam and experiments at LHC. I may have more to say on Thursday.
