Preparing for the coming age of clocked BG

Chuck's point is important.
Seems many backgammon players fall into two major categories: those that never count and those that count too often.
There are only a few times in any given game where the count is important. So, don't waste time otherwise.
As UBK says, you can keep a running relative count from the start but even this may be a bit excessive -- plus you may well still need the absolute count too. One can make an absolute count at a critical juncture and then keep a running count from that point for a few rolls, as required.
And people should learn to count, it is quite easy with practice. I do absolute counts because I want to know the total, something important in addition to the relative count difference. The various grouping and offset methods are quite good, accurate, and fast.
I've played on a clock probably 20-30 times in the last year or two -- mostly with 2/12 settings, a few with 2/15 settings. Even with the need for occasional counting I've never come close to a time crunch. People just need to play with a clock a bit to get comfortable with it.
