I've never been afraid to count the pips when on a clock when I know it matters. I use Kissane's Cluster Count, and usually I only have to add 3 or 4 number for each side, many of the numbers will end in zero which also makes it easy.. I like the system because it gives me the absolute number for both sides, not just the different. (I keep track of the first number on my fingers.)

I've never felt any new time pressure because I stopped to count the pips.
