1) 98% of the time all that matter is difference in pip counts and it isn't necessary to know the exact count.

2) Ignore checkers on the mid pt until the end of the calc/comparison and then adjust by +/- 13 or 26 or whatever.

3) Rely heavily on cluster counting.

I played 18 important matches in Madison only 2 or 3 times did I take a comlete pip count when both sides had checkers in their opp's outboards.

When your down by 15+ pips and cubed, you normally don't need to know the exact pip count. This is akin to asking your mommy if you need to wear a jacket to go outside in a blizzard.
