Keeping a running count in a non-race would throw my concentration away from (likely) more important things.

This usually works out fine for me. It's easy to do in a couple seconds on your opponent's time when you don't have to think about your decisions. It only becomes difficult in a big blot hitting contest.

As far as "opp is moving his checkers around", you can at least do the count of your own checkers. Then a difference count (even on your own clock) will give you the entire absolute pipcount.

I want something a little more...elegant ;)
