A couple more tidbits

1) The energy of two protons colliding at the LHC when the accelerator is at full power is equivalent to the energy of two (typical) mosquitoes colliding in flight.
2) At any given time (again, once the accelerator is running at full capacity), the energy stored in the beam is equivalent to 90 kg (200 lbs) of TNT. (That's pounds, not tons, not kilotons, not megatons....) In fact the energy stored in the magnets that steer and accelerate the particles is quite a bit more than the energy in the beam. I think the ratio of stored energy is about 30 between those two components.
