I certainly don't set any speed records, (probably 20 seconds or so), but I always feel confident that I'm getting the right answer. All the 'odd' math with the cancellation systems gets me confused (+18, -14, +22, etc); but that's just me. I do appreciate knowning both numbers. With clocks, I often will begin counting when it's my opponent's turn, (doing my side first).
Also, if it turns out to be lopsided enough to stop counting, you often can just give up when counting the 2nd number when you realize the number is out of bounds.
Once I have a race count and the cube is still available, I'll keep a running count differential as each roll happens.
One other short-cut in middle game positions is to just count the crossovers to get everyone into the home boards. This may give you a really fast ballpark estimate to decide if it's worth actually coming up with the actual number.
