In Response To: Practice Problem; PLEASE SHOW YOUR WORK! (Chuck Bower)

I just did my normal manual method (count white, count blue), took about 10 seconds total to do both sides. However, it is not a messy position (i.e. not too many straggling checkers to make it trickier to count).

I think it is important to know an absolute count, as you can apply all sorts of laws and rules when you know exact numbers (lamfords 10%, prime/build/run, etc). Differentials will help, but I personally like exact counts. While I am still mentally agile enough to do these counts quickly, and not be worried about clock time, I will continue to do what I am comfortable with.

I am enjoying reading the posts on this subject though, it is interesting to read how different people do it different ways.

re differential counts - I dont know if I am unique in this, but knowing the difference isnt enough for me! I gotta know how long the race is too. Maybe its a quirk of mine.

Oh, and my work here? Counted the stacks one at a time. Although my mind chooses which stacks to pick at which time. I suspect that since I know most of the stack counts by looking at the size of it, my brain picks the stack to add next that makes it easier to add with. Entirely subconscious though.
