Suppose he rolls something like 5-2. What is correct play? I think technically 52-down is better than splitting because of the fourth checker on 8th point.

I would play 52D in a flash vs. an opening play of 13/8.

But against the shy player he likely makes a split. I hope to see a little shock after 4-3 (24/20 6/3*), 5-2 (8/3*/1*) or 5-1 (24/23 8/3*) etc.

Assuming I did split, I'm not terribly worried when I get hit once or twice, unless I throw boxes from the roof.
