The positions are almost symmetrical -- Blue anchor is 42 pips and White's two back men are 45 pip. White's 3 point is 6 pips and Blue's 4 point is 8 pips. Blue picks up 3 pips one way and loses 2 pips the other. So ... the biggest asymmetry is Blue's 3 spares on the 6 point for 18 pips, which are balanced, yeah, "close enough that the positions aren't enough different to mean a double" by White's 1+1+10 = 12 pips from the corresponding checkers.
If I'd remembered that the starting position = 167 pips, then I'd have seen that Blue's count is 167-18-6 = 143, and White's is 167-3-3-10-3-10 = 138.
