That's correct (in the US). This has been debated for a century in Chess. Analysis of a position can be copyrighted. A position or transcript of a game or match can not.
I'm well aware of this, but there are still some gray areas in my mind:
Can a compilation of positions be copyrighted?
Can a choice of move be copyrighted?
It wouldn't seem so to me, but I'm no lawyer.
