Vista really isn't as bad as it's made out to be. Where people get into problems with it is when they upgrade a current PC from XP to Vista. If all of your hardware is not Vista compatible or has vista drivers, you will run into problems. When you buy a new PC though, everything will be Vista ready and you won't have such problems.
The second issue with Vista is the user account control. This is the little box that pops up asking if you want to "allow or deny" any changes made to your PC. It's annoying. But it can be disabled, and you won't ever see it again.
I've had Vista for a little over 6 months, and I can count the number of times it's crashed on one finger. It's been pretty rock solid stable (more stable than XP was for me) and I stress the hell out of my system.
