High-end build #1

So in retrospect, the mobos were a stretch for typical "budget" and "midrange" prices even though the overall prices were certainly well within that range (I largely neglected spending on the vid card, since I don't feel most would use it). I do feel it's worth spending the $$ for a quality board. So, at any rate, I can swap the low-end DFI LP with a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L P45 ($90) and save $80 there. And of course I can swap the ASUS Rampage Formula in the midrange with the DFI LP I used in the low-end, which would knock off $110 there. That's a total of $710 and $1,100 respectively. Anyway, onto the main course.

OS: standard deal, $99.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 Yorkfield 3.2GHz: $1450
There is an open box QX9650 at Newegg for half this price, which is probably just as good, but you only live once.

Mobo: ASUS Rampage Extreme X48: $390
It's really a question of this or the Striker, so is it Crossfire or SLI? I chose to go with the 4870 X2.

GPU: 2x Diamond Radeon HD 4870 X2: $1,000
This will definitely play Crysis. It'll also shoot Blu-Ray from its transistors.

RAM: Corsair Dominator 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1800: $440
Corsair also has DDR3 2000 RAM, but it's double the price. As it turns out, DDR2 RAM is cheap, but DDR3 RAM is expensive. This ought to do. I chose to go with the 4GB module in order to leave room for eventually upgrading to 8GB.

Hard Drive: Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache: $260
This thing is faaaaaassstt. You can throw in another cheap hard drive or two for data redundancy or storage.

Cooling: Swiftech H20-220-APEX-GT CPU Liquid Cooling Kit: $200
So basically, we are leaving the realm of what can be reasonably cooled by air. I've never touched water cooling before because it seems like a huge pain and air is almost as good.

Case: Cooler Master Cosmos S RC-1100-KKN1-GP: $250
I'd like to have something like this one of these days. It kind of looks like a Cylon from BSG.

Optical: LG Black 6X BD-R 2X BD-RE 16X DVD+/-R: $220
Blu-ray burners aren't even all that expensive anymore, it's just that both optical drives and internal storage have gotten so cheap that it's just not worth it.

PSU: PC Power & Cooling T12W 1200W: $500
So, with 90A on the 12V rail, it should be able to handle this.

Total: $4,740.
