I asked for a cite, Bill, not a personal attack. I imagine that most folks can tell the difference between the two, just as most folks can readily understand that what you asserted, which was that:
47% of the American "voting citizenry" pay no taxesis not supported by your cite, which says that:
Of federal tax filers with positive adjusted gross income in tax year 2005, the bottom 50% by income paid 3.07% of federal income taxesOne problem, Bill, is that (as jdg pointed out) you're still confusing "federal income taxes" with "all taxes." That's one reason why your assertion is indeed "far off." But the more obvious problem is that your cite and your assertion are simply saying two completely different things.
(For reference, I believe Bill is referring to data in Table 6 of an article in the IRS Statistics of Income Bulletin, Winter 2008, which is same publication I referenced here in this forum several days ago.)
Bill writes: Now, I don't immediately find the stat whereby it is stated that 47% pay no taxes, but with the bottom 50% paying only 3.07% I doubt that I'm far off, if at all.
You won't find such a statistic, Bill. Not because I'm in a "bubble of ignorance," but because it doesn't exist.
