Specifically, what if the rules were changed so that doubles would only give you two moves instead of four?
The idea of playing doubles twice in backgammon is only about 500 years old, which isn't very long for a game that's been around thousands of years. But most backgammon variants played today share this feature. I don't think that's an accident. I think it is because playing doubles twice makes backgammon a better game.

A few people on this thread have suggested that backgammon doesn't need any changes. I agree in one sense -- it's a fine game as it is. But does that mean we shouldn't look for ways to improve it? Backgammon didn't appear overnight; it evolved through many intermediate games. It was the constant quest for something better that gave us the game we know and love today.
Besides, it's fun looking for ways to improve the game. In fact, we are in the middle of a fairly major backgammon innovation right now, one that will definitely add skill to the game. (Think about it, and you can probably guess what I'm referring to.)
