A few people on this thread have suggested that backgammon doesn't need any changes. I agree in one sense -- it's a fine game as it is. But does that mean we shouldn't look for ways to improve it? Backgammon didn't appear overnight; it evolved through many intermediate games. It was the constant quest for something better that gave us the game we know and love today.

I am not against variants, I like variants.

I don't think that the argument "Backgammon has too much luck, therefore a rule change is needed, how about X" is a good argument in any step along the way.
