Changing the doubles rule would probably make the average game take longer. If tournament match lengths need to be shortened in order to make the schedule work, it's not clear how much you gain, skill-wise.

We faced this issue in Madison in designing the Cancelgammon event. The original suggestion was to combine the cancel feature with the Nackgammon starting position, in order to make for a really skillful variant. But it was clear that we would have had to shorten the match lengths (3 points?), since Nack games are so much longer.
