The use of clocks has nothing to do with the rules of the game.
I disagree.
The customary and standard time settings utilized in the ABT and in Europe are extremely fair and place little burden on most players. I rarely use half my allotted time in a match. The clocks are only meant to speed up the ridiculously slow players.
This may very well all be true. But look at chess: at the highest levels, players routinely get 3-4 hours or more for a game (6-8 hours or more, theoretically, for both sides). One would be correct in saying that no one will ever use that much time for every game, and usually will use less than half.
I wouldn't say that clocks revolutionized chess, but they certainly did change the nature of the game, even if they didn't change the way it was played. Chess is a much more grueling experience today than it was in 1880.
