Two suggestions on how to improve skill factor in tournaments

1) There is a lot of improvements possible by changing the formats. The basic idea is to make everybody play more. The more decisions, the more mistakes, and ultimately this rewards skill.
To succesfully implement it we need to use a clock.
This is very paralell to the world of poker, where you have tournaments with different structures.
2) A slight change of the opening rule, called playing backgammon with the slot rule, or even the double slot rule. The slot rule was invented by Nack Ballard so you know it is not a bullshit rule. Basically it says you have to slot either the bar point or a inner point on the very first roll. With a 31 for instance you should play 13/10 6/5. This leads to more action and on average longer and more difficult games.
I have tried it out, even played it with double slot rule which means you even have to slot/blot on the opening reply.
I highly reccomend it, but only for elite / open players.
