You look at chance of winning a best of 17 contest by finding P(that win it in exactly 9 games) + P(win it in exactly 10 games) + ... P(win it in exactly 17 games). That is fine.

I would have done it differently. I would have assumed all 17 games were played out and then found P(won exactly 9 games OR won exactly 10 OR ... OR won exactly 17). And then since this is just a sum of binomial probabilities it is easy to ask minitab to add it up.
