There is more to it than how often a double is a joker.

i) Suppose that rule change was made. A race lead would be significantly harder to overcome. Thus strategy is shifted more to just getting a race lead and converting to a race. Does that lead to a more skillful game?

ii) Doubles have a lot of options and are thus harder to get correct. Does removing the toughest checker play decisions give a more skillful game?
