If you have a chance, enter some kind of earlybird jackpot or other small entry fee event before the main event. I always do that because I seldom play face-to-face except at tournaments. For me it serves to "get the rust out".

Daniel, Chuck's advice is sounds, especially if this is your first live tournament. I recall feeling awkward for a game or two when using a live tournament-sized board the first time I ventured into tournament play years back, after having been re-introduced to the game via online bg back in the late 90s.

You don't mention whether you are local to Balmer, but if you are, you might consider going to Vic Morawski's local tournament in Cockeysville this Thursday, Oct. 16, to get used to the mechanics. The entry fee is only $10, so it's a good cheap way to get used to over the board play, and if you're lucky you may get to play one of the most recently successful and celebrated U.S. players if he decides to show up for a tune-up.

Here's the website for that club: http://www.baltimorebackgammonclub.com/ There are also two other clubs in the Baltimore/Washington area which you can get at by clicking "Link N' Things" on the above-mentioned link.
