Advice for a virgin

1. On bigger boards, count your moves more carefully. It is easy to accidentally count the bar. Pay attention to the color of the pips - if you are moving an odd number, the checker had better land on a different color than it started on.

2. Manage liquid/caffeine like you are taking a long drive. Too much or too little of either will result in "accidents."

3. If you are not used to marathon sessions, remember to stop occasionally and take stock. The first couple of tournaments that I went to, I noticed my play declined substantially on the second day. If your brain is getting foggy, ask for a five minute break and go get some air.

4. At some point, remember that this is fun.
