In Response To: Why Are TD's So Resistant? (Coolrey)

To the extent someone's age/infirmity/handicap is "detrimental to the tournament at large" they should not play. I would think they would step aside themselves out of consideration for everyone else -- or is consideration a one way street?

I've played Larry several times, like Larry a lot (consider him a friend), and appreciate all he does for the game. Unless his condition has seriously deteriorated in the last six to nine months there is no reason in the world for him to lose on time.

My simple point is that if you start making allowances for some people then every Tom, Dick, and Harry is going to want his -- unfortunately that is a very sad fact of the current human nature. Name the condition -- motor skills, eyesight, intelligence (some people don't think as fast), sleep apnea, a pea-sized bladder, maybe simple inexperience, and don't forget the cigarette addict (how can we reasonably expect him to smoke only once in a two hour match?, his play is obviously going to be affected by withdrawal symptoms). I'm just saying, you can't vary a standard and expect it not to be a morass.

Even with 2/12 settings (the fastest standards), I, and most open players I have played on a clock, usually comfortably finish our matches with half or more of our bank time remaining. Forget UBK as he tries to exhaust every second he has available as some sort of efficiency exercise.

Now, Ray, I've heard you bitch unendingly about tournament schedules. Let's say some infirm/aged/handicapped slower-playing person gets on a winning streak and rather than the final, against Ray, being at 1 pm Sunday, as scheduled, it is at 8 pm Sunday -- and you had a 7 pm flight. So, you get to stalk around all day pissed off and irritated, likely consequently play substandardly, miss your flight -- and pay another $100 for the privilege of change, have to spend another night in the city, and miss a day of work because of it. Are you happy? -- and don't bullshit a bullshitter. And, remember, probably half the people in the tournament are, to varying degrees, impacted by that slow half of the bracket. So, you have a whole cadre of frustrated, pissed-off participants; not to mention the staff that ends up being there many hours longer than they had planned.

Just set reasonable standards that address the serial slow players, that respect ALL players, and that allow the tourney schedule to be maintained. Then, for one and all, everyone can play. If they lose on time, then they can play faster or hang it up. If they can't keep up there are any number of opportunities to play in side events, chouettes, and heads-up matches.

But you can't make unlimited concessions for anyone. The serial slow player is going to say "what difference does it make if I'm clocked if you're going to let the match at the next table take five hours"? And he's right.
