I didn't see how he lost on time, but obviously he thought too much. Mechanical movement difficulty only accounts for a small dealay... Larry would do well to have 3 extra seconds to move... But it won't make up for inability to pull the trigger on a play.

ie- if the 15 second delay is helping you consistently NOT to lose time, then you were never going to default on time anyway... If there are 5 mins of time on your clock... it would take 100 3 second losses to use it up! One play you think 5 minutes on is not all that rare in backgammon, but that is where the problem lies. Larry likes to think and doesn't like to be rushed, but I am sure he likes to lose on time LESS. He will adapt to avoid that, or quit.

Maybe the best way is in exceptional circumstances... Like over 80 years old or physically handicapped... Maybe the best solution is to give both players a few more minutes. That doesn't give the handicapped player an advantage, or affect the length of the tournament to any undue extreme.

If Larry, or any other player loses on time when he has been given extra time to compensate for his particular handicap then clearly he does not have a legitimate beef. Larry obviously is somewhat oblivious to time constraints. He made it to the money round in a tournament last year and had only a few seconds left on his clock then. This time, he LOST on time. I bet he will be conscious of that NEXT time. With the current limits, and 12 seconds for EVERY move before any time goes off your time balance there just isn't ANY excuse for losing on time.

It comes down to inattentiveness, plain and simple. Larry fucked up, but it is still a shame and I am quite sure nobody felt good about it. Knowing Larry, I doubt if he would ask for any special considerations, even though I AM. He will just make an adjustment to get done before his flag falls.

I hope he just doesn't quit. Clocks are no big deal and I bet that there will never EVER be a person who loses on time more than ONCE.
