I have never had a difficult time playing with a clock or a close call on time. Sometimes I think that perhaps I play faster, and less well as a result, with a clock.

Bill Davis or those who established the clock guidelines might do better to weigh in on this subject than us. If European time constraints are less, as appears from the text of your message, then we already have the loosest/slowest time limits already. I singled you out, but I probably shouldn't have.

The overall general consensus I am seeing here is that people with limited experience say something like:

It might have been nice to have a little more time, even though I was never in danger of losing on time, yada yada... Maybe it would be better to have it be X/xX??? But I can't really say cuz I only played twice with a clock in my life, if at all.

Play first, suggest change later is my point.

INSIST on a clock in your match if you are a player and favor them. Rory did that with me, (for what reason I have no idea), but I didn't care. Go to the director and say I would like a clock in my match. Jason Lee does this to me in Los Angeles, and every other player he plays. You walk up, and the board is set up and the clock is set and ready to go. It's not optional, at least in Pat Gibson's super 32.

If someone requests a clock, and directors opt to honor those requests, then clocks will become accepted as the norm. Personally, I like playing without one a little bit better, but I know that nobody is going to gain an advantage over me if there is one. So, who cares?

If you ask for a clock in your match, and are refused by the director at least you tried. If the match is moving slowly, you might approach the director and say I told you so. Eventually the directors will get tired of hearing it and give your squeaking wheel some grease.

Mostly what I have been reading is players who suggest a clock to their opponent who tends to politely decline... Then they are so curious as to ask lots of questions about clock use during the match. Don't give them an option if one player requests a clock, I say. Some people might complain, but I never did when Jason or Rory did this. I would like the director to come over and explain that my opponent has requested a clock out of courtesy, which Pat nor Linda did. But that is a small issue.

Don't give people an option to decline, because the confused mind says no.

If you go to a tournament planning to request a clock in every match it seems wise to invest in a clock of your own. One can't expect already strapped directors to make a large investment of capital if the whiny ass players wanting clocks don't provide one.

Ask NOT, what the TD can do for you.... ASK what YOU can do for the TD!
