How about an "over 80" rule that gives each side another 5 minutes of clock time, or another 20 seconds per point. The handicapped player's opponent ALSO gets a little extra time, so there is no advantage given. He won't use it anyway, but it might prevent Larry from losing on time.

Larry is a colorful character whose presence enhances any tournament he plays in. He contributes heavily to the Calcutta auctions, which helps the directors make ends meet. He gives of his time freely with beginner lessons.

A great LA player and author, Norm Wiggins, is shaky. Others are partially paralyzed. There are a couple of examples of rheumatoid arthritis which causes deformities of the hands.

Maybe and extra 5 mins per clock will help a limited player overcome the intricacies of clock management, which for most of us is not a factor. Just a thought.

Many of the elder statesmen like Larry and Norm have contributed greatly to the current state of the art in Backgammon. To give them short shrift by enforcing the rules to the letter despite an obvious need for a fair adjustment seems like a flagrant foul to me.
