Just speculation, but Larry could have timed out with 3 checkers left when he wasn't gin to win. (The match still could have either player winning).

However, if he WAS gin, he should have stopped the clocks and claimed it.

Clock rule 5.3:
TIME EXPIRATION. A player who exhausts his reserve time before he can validly claim the match is declared the loser.

This gives the player the right to claim the match.
