In chess either you or your opponent, or both, are constantly concentrating on the position. Specifically, your calculations determine whether you win or lose. Also, if anyone were to actually say anything at all about the position, the variations are so close together that it could influence someone's decision making. Chess players have good reason to be anal retentive about the noise level near a chessboard. Not so in backgammon.
The noise level will probably drop and maybe there will be a few complaints, but it's usually hardly critical to the outcome of a game. If someone interrupts you while you are trying to do a pip count that's one thing, but making general comments while someone is rolling the dice or playing an obvious move probably won't go away.
