You make some good points. However I don't think players are "required" to bring their own boards. I've never seen/heard of a penalty or even a warning to someone who didn't have one. 'Encouraged', yes. In the old days (maybe not even that long ago; possibly at the Midwest Champs in the late 90's) there was an extra incentive 'bonus' if you brought a board. (At the Midwest you were asked when you signed in.)

Just because you bring a clock doesn't mean you must loan it out (similar to if you bring a board). I know there can be peer pressure to loan them to someone, though.

Back in the mid-90's I was sneered at by a so-called 'expert', too, when I declined to put a side bet on a match. It's a bit unsettling until you realize that there's one part in life you've got an advantage over this jerk. Before long there may be another.
