Peoria's Calcutta

I do Calcuttas in LA, and Colorado. Usually the directors pick the teams, but I think they ought to consult one of the best players. There were some players in the A group in Peoria that didn't belong, and I was glad to get David Rubin out of the B group. He is underestimated in his ability. His wife stepped up and beat me, and she was leading 10-1 against Carter in round 3 (!). So I think she would have been playing to get in the money if she hadn't gotten unlucky in that match.
I do think the Calcutta generated more interest, especially since Neil came in at 12 to find it going on and then he started to bid also. That's a good thing to do Neil, to SUPPORT the tournaments that put your name on the top of a list. Usually Neil doesn't contribute that way. The Directors got an important 10% of close to $10K, and that helps tremendously with stuff like coffee, ($50 per gallon), etc.
Larry Liebster generates extra excitement for he generally refuses to be outbid for first choice. I was going to try, but Larry was determined. He picked Neil and a couple of other good B players. I got the 3rd pick and ended up with Steve Brown and David Rubin and Chris Knapp. Steve beat David in the semis by virtue of 3 sets of 6s in 4 rolls, then he lost in the finals when Tim Mabee rolled three in a ROW, after warming up with 55,44,22 first. Chris won the Last Chance, but that didn't pay any calcutta money. It was a good team!
I think Larry's high first bid and the new format increased the excitement and income. Larry contributed a LOT to the process, so who cares if he plays a little slowly, and needs more time on his clock? I think that the open with 47 players made about $7K, and we made a similar amount with 59 players in LA last year. Nice going, Peoria.
