The Victory Point scoring system.
Team A plays Team B. Duplicate hands - 3 of them. Team A NS plays Team B EW, vice versa.
At the end of the 3 hands, scores are then accumulated per hand. So, in theory, because of the duplicate hands, the scores should be the same - but they arent - as different contracts are bid and played.
So, Hand 1:
Hand 1:Team A scores +620, Team B scores -100, net 520 for Team A Hand 2:Team A scores -50, Team B scores +50, net 0 Hand 3:Team A scores +100, Team B scores +200, net 100 for Team B
These scores are then turned into IMPS. International Match Points. For each hand. This then scores as:
Hand 1:Team A 11 imps Hand 2:zero Hand 3:Team B 3 imps
This is then netted to a victory of 8 imps by team A. This is then plugged into a VP scale which equates to: 12-8 in favor of Team A.
Typically a swiss system is employed, and your scores accumulate, highest plays highest, lowest plays lowest and such forth.
At the end of the rounds, the VP's are added up and the team with the most VPs wins the tournament.
Thats how it works in bridge. Thats why it wont work in backgammon - because bridge is duplicate. Now, if you could do it with die rolls, yes it would be a possibility.
I personally dont see how it could work in BG, theres too few limitations involved.
