I think OTB my play would be 10/9 3/1, still 3 builders and no jokers or clearing the bar

What's the problem with clearing the bar ? You don't think of containing anything, do you ? 7/5 7/6 gives the same 3 builders and no jokers but gets 2 crossovers instead of 0.

Moreover, the 3/1 half just looks hideous.

He is trying to avoid the 66 shot leaving joker. But is merely trading it for a 55 shot leaving joker.

There is always going to be either a 66 or 55 joker that you must give up. So, best play by far is to make the most optimal crossovers and optimal bear off position - in this case breaking the bar point. Just live with a painful 66.
