I see some value too

In Response To: Proposal for new tournament format, partly "stolen" from Bridge team tournaments.(Warning: Long) (Ivar Røynstrand)

I think there is excellent value here, even if it is too radical for a two-day big-money tourney. There are two goals that variants like this work toward. First, we find ways to improve the tournament experience at the standard format tournaments. Without discussions like this, would we have any idea how to use clocks in BG? People have been talking about them for years - it took a lot of trial and error and a lot of lively discussion to figure out reasonable rules and settings, and I am not sure we are quite there yet.

Also, what we deride as deviations from traditional BG strategy caused by the scoring system are actually interesting strategy problems that might make for an interesting change of pace. I remember Sam talking about the match-equity table he generated for the Michigan Freeze-Out event. These variants keep people on their toes and excited about the game. You should expect TDs to be pretty resistant to introducing this idea directly into a weekend event - big events are not the time to take big risks. But side events or one-off Sunday tourneys are perfect for this kind of thing.

Anyone for a Cancelgammon tourney? How about Nackgammon or Kill Phil? Don't tell me that these don't lead to "impure" play.
