Clock Petition

In Response To: Clock Petition (Coolrey)

I am not sure whether a petition is necessary or not. For clocks to be used it definitely requires not just the approval of TDs, but also their support and advocacy. But I am in favor of clocks, of course.

A switch to clocks mandatory tournaments in the Open division of future ABT evetns. We feel strongly that the current conditions and regulations in regards to clocking matches tend to unfairly punish the innocent victims of habitually slow players.

We believe that clocking all matches will penalize those responsible for any delays, which is more fair.

I don't believe that clocks are supposed to "penalize" anybody, unless they flag. The point IMO is just to have a more structured, professional environment and make life easy for the TDs and players. If clocks are counterproductive then they shouldn't be used IMHO, but I also can't honestly see clocks being counterproductive.

Clocks mandatory will cause consternation and be controversial for some, but we, (the experienced and the all knowing), believe strongly that these will merely constitute "growing pains" and not terminal cancer.

I laughed at this.

Once instituted clocks will become an accpted part of Backgammon as they have become in chess.

Maybe they will, maybe they won't. The acceptance of clocks in Europe (esp. DBgF and Partouche) bodes very well, and as I believe Neil has said, one could do worse than to follow their lead.

We believe further that the institution of clocks for all matches will simplify the current rules and regulations of the World Backgammon Association or whatever name the current established governing body is, I forget!

Hmmm....I think the language should be altered here.

It is our fervent hope that all Open division ABT events will be played with a clock beginning in the year 2009.

Like I have said, I am willing to make compromises or entertain discussions if this doesn't meet the needs of TDs. At the very least I feel events should be clocks allowed. If there is a significant up-front cost of clocking everything then there are various ways to resolve that.
