Dave posted: I'd prefer to just see matches being lost if they're flagged, it can prevent some kinds of gamesmanship that Bob Koca mentioned in a previous post. For example, I saw a match in Baltimore where player A is losing at 11-away, 10-away with the cube on 16. Why not just wait the clock out and take two penalty points. Quite a difference!!
I don't understand the gamesmanship issue here. If the clock expires, the opponent is awarded 2 penalty points + 1 minute of additional clock time, and the match continues from there. The current game, with the cube on 16 is resumed at the point the clock ran out. Perhaps Bob or someone was thinking that the current game would be restarted anew upon the expiration of time.
I also agree in actual practice that clock issues and potential for timing out will for the most part occur at the end of matches, where 2 points can make the difference in determining the winner or loser.
I'm not sure who the player was in Baltimore that was playing @ 10-away, 11-away, but if their time was an issue at that many points away, they are certainly going to be awarding points to their opponent perhaps several times. Heck, I think I could take a 5 minute bathroom break during a 15 point match with my clock counting down and still not time out.
