My clock proposal for ABT events for 2009 and beyond

I have never played with a clock nor do pretend to understand how much time allowance there is for a comfortable pace of place; not very fast or very slow. I know when I play I tend to ask myself what are the 3 candidate plays to consider? Then I make my play. There is a pause, but not enough of a pause to irritate my opponent. Would my style of play be condusive to clock play without having to play underpressure of clocking out?
From your description you would have no problems leading to losing on time. 95% of players (my estimate) would have no time-expired problems at their current pace. The other 5% would likely be able to speed up their play and still not hurt their games (actually they might IMPROVE their BG!). Part of the slow play (there are many reasons) are people who wait long before even shaking, apparently looking at what rolls they want, maybe even praying to the dice gods to get those numbers. Another problem is players who don't double at the right time (i.e. too late) and then decide, well, now I'll play for the G.... Then the (long) game ends with a 1-point result. This is where some people's games will actually improve -- they start to double at the right time, maximizing equity.
The handicapped&age issues have been discussed on this forum quite a bit. Two weeks ago there was a 'perceived' problem there involving a regular ABT player (Larry Liebster) who is in his 70's. But what we found out in the end was that he (and opp) was given an extra 3 seconds per move over the standard settings but still lost on time.
