Hidden issue

It seems to me that there is a hidden issue here: WHO is giving/given the "option", permission, "allowance".... Is it the director or the players? Obviously "clocks required" or "clocks mandatory" needs no qualification because there is no option for anyone.

Either player's choice? (But choice of what? Choice NOT to use clocks??)

Players' concurrence? (Still doesn't work.)

Stick could be of more help. I gotta believe other games/sports have similar issues. He claims to play about every card game ever thought up (and better than anyone else...). He also plays tennis (I don't).

It's gotta be out there somewhere.
