Clocks and doubles

The answer of course, is just not to play in the doubles. I know I don't play unless my partner pays the whole entry fee, (UBK was an exception). Doubles is just tedious if you are a PRO, I am sorry. However, backgammon tournaments are NOT just for PROS only. Others like the social nature of the game, Neil usually plays with women who admire his ability and want the best chance to win for instance... Ladies who have asked me want a better chance to win, but they expect the pro to pay his half, out of ignorance more than disrespect I am sure. Pat Gibson and Harvey Gillis LOVE to discuss all possible plays and dice rolls... and since they love it, we have to let them do it, I guess... Or we will eliminate a reason that they come to play in ABT events.
Clocking doubles seems contrary to the spirit of that event, sadly. Anyway, I just don't like it and have plenty of stuff to worry about playing in the Masters and Open. I leave the doubles to the amateurs and let them alone. I don't need to be sitting there, listening to someone discussing in all seriousness obscure features of some meaningless position in order to impress me with their knowlege of the game, all the while giving me knowing glances while they "explain" the position to their partner, sigh. (!)
If they don't know what they are doing, or both partners don't, it is even more intolerable but hey, they are enjoying their experience perhaps because they are playing with their hero, or their financial exposure is not so much or they are trying to learn or whatever. We have to allow some room for that I suppose to allow the game to grow.
In LA, Doubles is not played until SUNDAY, which is different from other ABT events. If you are out you can join and play, and they usually get 8 teams, Pat Gibson usually allows himself the luxury of playing doubles on Sunday. Unless he has changed the schedule that is how it has always been in LA.
