Losing when I outplay my opponent by a mountain

For the top tier of BG players playing in open tournaments, luck operates mostly in one direction, and I don't know how they stand it. Intermediates with good dice can win against stronger players, but the top players never get that chance - they can only lose to weaker players when they get bad dice. (OK, and beat their peers as a result of good dice, but that's not my point).

Coming out of the chess world, where the top players in a tournament dominate about 99% of the time, it has been a shock to me to see a world class BG player come to a small local tournament of intermediates, and not take 1st or even 2nd.
