But you couldn't do that in chess. Every error has equity loss of either .5 or 1.

Theoretically, yes. In practice, though, the thing that turns out to be the killer is making an error that isn't big enough to cause you to resign immediately and dismiss to the bar, but just big enough to cause you to have to do grubby defense for the next 2 or 3 hours, only to ultimately lose anyway. It's enough to drive you to switch to BG.
