Chess programs and BG programs are more similar than I imagine most would think.

No program can brute force all the variations in chess, there are just way too many positions, so it has to stop somewhere. Both chess and BG involve n-ply lookahead and pruning, it's just that in chess you are dealing with 10-25 plies vs. 2-3 plies for BG.

Chess programs have also recently developed something similar to a rollout feature of sorts whereby they play out several short games in each variation and analyze the results.

Chess programs also have evaluation functions and weights, same as BG engines. But they are not neural nets.
