It's a collateral hazard of having buybacks. Bad thing is you may only have one match the first day -- which is also a good thing because you won (or, alternatively, another bad thing if you lost and didn't buy back, or you lost a long match and all the buyback positions were already sold). Good thing is, effectively, a larger field and larger purses. But Howard wants all the buyback matches played at least by the end of the first evening and the one match also gives a nice clean start to doubles. Ideally, you then begin the second day with a full 64 person bracket in the main.
