Inventor of Doubling Cube (article)

I'm skeptical. Even the author of the article seems to question the credibility when he says "according to one story".
I find the explanation given by Grosvenor Nicholas in his 1928 book at least as compelling: Nicholas writes: "It is said that doubling ... was first originated on the continent of Europe in connection with the game of golf."
Nicholas was a respected author and player. He was the chairman of the Backgammon and Cards Committee of the Racquet and Tennis Club of New York, which drafted the modern rules of backgammon in 1931.
Another prominant player of the time, Oswald Jacoby (who was also on Nicholas's Rule Committee), makes no mention of Dmitri in his 1970 book.
