I find it offensive if Katja was playing slowly herself and then complained about no clocks. She didn't seem indecisive as Lars Bonding's partner in the Pro Am in Vegas a few years back.

I think great players all go through a stage where they are good players and they sit and stew over decisions, especially in big tournaments that act as their coming out party. All of thses factors were in evidence when MCG made the finals in Vegas. I am quite sure the best player lost in the finals, and that is too bad.

Matt will become an exceptionally great player BECAUSE he overthinks and takes his time. He frustrated Kit Woolsey, whom I voted as the #1 giant of backgammon because he always slaughters me, every time. Matt outplayed him too, it looks like. Katja must have been partially frustrated too, to have made such a comment. I will laugh with Falafel and tell him to his face he is the slowest player on the planet because he makes such a production of just sitting down to play his match! He is great however, and he is a "thinker".

Thinkers, especially those with computer aided training, become the toughest customers around. When Matt has gained more experience, much of the thinking will have been done and his speed will increase. He is dangerous now, look out for him then!

He made a believer out of me in Vegas.
