I do kick myself before roll usually when I see my opponent's board is such a mess trying to make sure I don't forget to look for 'tricky plays'.

Good habit, but here there just seem to be a scarcity of wide open plays to make. You don't worry about blotting on the 13-point but I feel that the five is better used to get off the 18-point. I see your point about having a 3rd checker there -- a common theme for owning a point on opp's side. The problem (and it is common with this theme) is that you might not be able to afford the luxury of a third checker there because of limited timing. I think that is the case here.
