I believe that WGC was born from the downfall of MSN zone, which had a ton of user run tournaments. Microsoft decided to change the software, so no more user run tourneys, and their bot is so bad that if you can't BACKGAMMON it, you're having a really bad day. SHG is a more recent addition.

Patty Geoffrey hosts as Lady Sally in WGC, in the gammonzone area I believe. I do prefer the fact that you don't have to dl software with SHG, especially for HD space challenged users.
