In Response To: Catchup #5 - Vegas Clock Forum (Stick)

Patrick had invited me to attend the forum, and unfortunately, I was unable to make it. However, prior to the event we did discuss my views on clocks, so while nothing I said made the minutes, at least my thoughts were heard.

My thoughts in summary for the record -

I am fully in favor of clock usage. Mandatory, on demand, on request, whatever, whenever.

I felt a 2/15 time control would be best for general use.

I don't like the idea of specific players feeling they are being personally targeted due to perceived reputation (earned or not). Nor do I like the idea that clocks currently come out only after it is too late to have avoided the problem. I was rather emphatic that clocks should AUTOMATICALLY be employed on the match(es) furthest behind in any round of the tournament, regardless of whether the tournament is currently behind schedule. In the first round, clock some matches that have not received a bye (id them on the draw sheet before random draw). In this way, nobody is being picked on. You are the match furthest behind the rest, you get a clock. Nothing personal. Announce this policy at the calcutta. I recounted an ABT tourney I was at with 33 players, and that one extra "anti-bye" match took 3.5 hours. This match should have been clocked from the start - because it was obviously where the risk of delay was.
